This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re hosting a CD release party for Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Eric Lee. The special guests are all Nā Hōkū winners as well: Kenneth Makuakane (with a possible appearance by Lehua Heine of Na Leo), and Kūpaoa!

You may remember that Eric, founding member of the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning group Nā Kama, released his debut solo recording “Crossroads” in May. He was among the first musicians in Hawai‘i to release his recording directly to digital download format. Until now, the recording was available exclusively on iTunes and Amazon.com. It is now being made available in CD format as well – and the CD includes three bonus tracks previously not available.

As a former member of the group “Nā Kama,” Lee was primarily known for his expertise in writing and performing contemporary Hawaiian music – something his fans will find on this recording as well. However, “Crossroads” also showcases his versatile playing and vocal styles and the influence rock, blues, country, folk, jazz and other genres have had on him. With its blend of Hawaiian and contemporary music, “Crossroads” invites you to see a side of Lee’s music many have never before experienced.

Lee performs all vocals and most of the instrumentation (acoustic and electric guitar, ‘ukulele, electric and upright bass) on the album, but several guest musicians are featured on individual tracks, including John Koko of the Mākaha Sons on upright acoustic bass, Bruce Shimabukuro on ‘ukulele, Kit Ebersbach on piano, and more.

Reviews of “Crossroads,” Lee’s debut solo effort, have been uniformly positive:

“An assortment of Hawaiian, hapa-haole and pop tunes presented in clean contemporary Hawaiian arrangements. Fans of Nā Kama can count on liking Lee as a solo artist.” – John Berger, Honolulu Star Bulletin, Hawai‘i

“An outstanding first solo effort!” – Don Bradway, KFOK FM, California

“All the songs just pull you into them… you can tell the hard work and thought that went into them. The vocals are fantastic, the instrumentals flawless… wonderful pacing and tempo... The quality of the music just forces you to listen to it, and pay attention to what you are hearing.” – Kaukini Norm, KAPU FM, California

I’ve received questions regarding the Grammy Awards vs. the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. The eligibility period is different for the two awards – for the Grammys, the recording must have been released for sale and in general distribution in the United States between October 1 and August 31 (apparently recordings released in September aren’t eligible at all… or there’s a typo in the Grammy eligibility criteria… LOL!), while the Na Hoku Awards are based on recordings released in the calendar year. Thus, recordings may be eligible for Na Hoku consideration in one year but not for Grammy consideration until the following year.

As for why many recordings are not considered for a Grammy in the Hawaiian category (including those that might have won numerous Na Hoku Hanohano Awards), there are two primary reasons that I can think of – they were either not submitted, or they didn’t qualify in the category. The Recording Academy solicits entries from associate and voting members, as well as record companies that are registered with the Academy. (Although record companies may submit albums for consideration, they cannot vote.) The problem is that very few people in the Hawaiian music industry are Academy members – especially voting members - and record companies are either not registered with the Academy or are not submitting titles for consideration – or both. (A glance at the above list tells me the majority of the entries are by artists on the Mountain Apple label, Punahele Productions, and Daniel Ho Creations – those three labels are obviously on the ball!)

Also, one of the qualifications that must be met in order to be considered for entry in the Hawaiian Grammy category is that the majority of the vocals must be in the Hawaiian language – which means that an entry by someone like Cecilio and Kapono, despite their enormous popularity both here and on the mainland, wouldn’t qualify because their vocals are in English.

The list above isn’t a list of nominations; rather, it’s a list of all eligible entries that have been submitted for consideration. Academy members eligible to vote will select from this list those entries that they wish to see on the final ballot. The nominations will be announced in December, and the Awards take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday Jan. 31, 2010. Best of luck to all!

Artist Ea Eckerman will participate in the Open Studios Art Tour in Santa Cruz October 3 and 4, 11am - 6pm. He and his brother Michael will have on view a lot of new sculptures, paintings, photographs and much more. Although not technically a “Hawaiian Event,” Ea lived in Hawai’i for some time, and much of his work reflects that. He did several of the paintings that were used as posters for Jack Johnson’s Kokua Festival, as well as the Women’s Triple Crown of Surfing, and the Stand-up Paddle Pa’ina and his art was featured in the Surfer’s Journal and can even be seen on surfboards!

Tour tickets are $20 – information is available at the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County website.

The Eckerman Studios are located at 301 Hanover Street, Santa Cruz.

    To those who subscribe to this newsletter via email, apparently the email for the last one didn’t go out until one or two days after I’d posted the newsletter online. My last blog site emailed the newsletter the minute I posted it, but there is a delay with this one – although usually not several days’ worth! I apologize for the problems, and hope you didn’t miss an event because of it!

      Aloha kakou!
      In today’s newsletter:
      • This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis - Uluwehi Guerrero
      • This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis (OC16 TV) – Tunana da Band
      • Anuhea and Maunalua – O’ahu
      • Kupaoa – Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and… Sacramento?
      • Sympathies, Congratulations and Get Well Soon…
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Kumu Hula and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Uluwehi Guerrero is this week’s guest on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis. Celebrating the release of his 3rd album (“Uluwehi Sings Na Mele Hula Aloha - beloved hula songs”), Uluwehi ("growing in beauty") will also bring some members of his award-winning hula halau (school), Halau Hula Kauluokala, to perform.
      Awarded Best Male Vocalist honors for his second CD, “In My Heart,” at the 2001 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, Uluwehi’s first two CDs were nominated for Na Hokus a total of seven times. This long-awaited third CD may very well add to his list of nominations and awards. Nearly one hour in length, “Uluwehi Sings Na Mele Hula Aloha” includes some rarely-recorded traditional songs, some old-time favorites and some originals. All are sung in Hawaiian, with Uluwehi’s own rich, warm vocal harmonies.
      In addition to his Na Hoku award, Uluwehi has won top honors at several falsetto competitions throughout the state of Hawai’i. And the man apparently never sleeps – here are just a few of his accomplishments: he teaches ’ukulele; has a large and talented Hawaiian choir; has judged many hula competitions in Hawai’i, the mainland, and Guam; has given popular hula workshops throughout Hawai´i, North America, the Pacific basin, and Japan; contributes his time and talents through concert performances to help numerous local organizations in their fund-raising efforts; and has lent his time and incredible musical and vocal arrangements to other recording artists, such as Keali´i Reichel and Lei’ohu Ryder of Maui.
      Uluwehi has also performed for different halau at the Merrie Monarch Festival; was a Special Guest Soloist for the sold-out holiday concerts with the Maui Symphony for four years; has performed with the Honolulu Symphony as a special guest for their Pops Concert Series; has performed at Carnegie Hall; and is a choreographer and designer of hula attire. He has been critically acclaimed from California to New York, Canada to Japan. His large-scale solo Maui concerts in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 were all sold-out, standing-room-only gala events. He is a true cultural ambassador of Aloha.
      Please join host Tony Solis in welcoming special guest Uluwehi Guerrero to the Pakele Live stage on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 6-8 pm at the Ala Moana Hotel (410 Atkinson Dr., Honolulu). It’s free, (no cover/no minimum), all ages are welcome, and there’s free parking next door at Ala Moana Shopping Center. Drinks are available for purchase.
      If you can’t be there in person, watch live online at http://www.pakelelive.com/
      Those in Japan can watch at: http://www.j-wave.co.jp/
      You may email the show at pakele@lava.net – mention your name and where you’re located - city, state – or country, if outside the U.S.!
      Beginning Wednesday (Sept. 9) on OC16 TV and online, Pakele Live! with Tony Solis features Tunana da Band, with Tarvin Makia, Ron Kuala'au, and Hale Villiarimo. The show will continue to air daily (at different times – check the schedule online) for one week.
      As part of their “Shop with Aloha” special on Sept. 12, Kahala Mall (O’ahu) is holding a free concert and autograph session at Center Court with Anuhea from noon to 1 pm and Maunalua from 2 to 3 pm.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

      Santa Cruz peeps - it’s confirmed! 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners Kupaoa (Lihau Hannahs and Kellen Paik) will play at Bocci’s Cellar October 28. You don’t want to miss this concert – I’ve heard them play live many times, and their harmonies never fail to give me chicken skin. Ticket info will be available soon…

      For those in the San Francisco area, Kupaoa will also be playing with Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakane’s Halau Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu October 24 and 25.

      And Sacramento area peeps, I’m working on a show for you, too. Stay tuned (and keep your fingers crossed!).
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Sympathies, Congratulations and Get Well Soon:
      Deepest sympathies to Sacramento Borders General Manager Tom Hedtke on the recent passing of his mother. Tom is a huge fan of Hawai’i in general and Hawaiian music in particular, bringing as many musicians as he can from Hawai’i to his store for free in-store concerts. Musicians from here, used to having maybe 10 people (if that) show up at a local Borders in-store, are shocked when they see the hundreds who turn out to support them at Tom’s Borders. Our thoughts are with you and your ohana, Tom…
      Get well wishes go out to singer/songwriter/musician Rupert Tripp, Jr., who was in a serious auto accident on the Big Island this past weekend. He was flown to Queen’s hospital here on O’ahu, and last I heard is in stable condition. Please keep him and his ohana in your thoughts and prayers!
      I’d also like to send out get well wishes to Hawaiian 105’s Billy V, who in addition to his radio show also appears on the KGMB9 morning show (“Sunrise”), is the voice of UH Athletics and the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and MCs numerous other events each and every day here in Hawai’i – and who constantly volunteers his time for worthy causes. He’s on the mend – but was finally forced to spend some time resting his voice and recuperating at home. Get well soon, Billy!
      On a happier note, David and Lisa Kamakahi welcomed their baby daughter Michele into the world yesterday (09/09/09!). Uncle Dennis Kamakahi says all are doing fine and he’s finally graduated from “Uncle” to “Tutu”!!! (He’s not at all excited… first grandchild… LOL!). Congratulations to the entire Kamakahi ohana!
      And finally, congratulations go out to Kellen and Lihau of Kupaoa, who became engaged earlier this week! It’s been a big year for them - Ho’omaka’i!
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        Beginning Wednesday (Sept. 2) on OC16 TV and online, Pakele Live! with Tony Solis features 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners Kupaoa. The show will air at 7 pm, and will continue to air daily (at different times – check the schedule online) for one week.

        Kupaoa (Lihau Hannahs and Kellen Paik) will return to the live Pakele show on Sept. 24 as part of the CD release party for Eric Lee (formerly of Na Kama). And California peeps – they’re heading your way in October! (More info on that as the time nears…)
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis our guest is Kamakakehau (Kamaka) Fernandez. Regular Pakele Live viewers may remember Kamaka from a brief guest appearance early this year when he was called on stage to sing “Alika” with Emily Abrigo during the Abrigo Ohana’s first Pakele Live performance. The response to Kamaka’s appearance was so overwhelming that we’ve been trying to bring him back ever since – and we finally succeeded.
        Born in Arkansas but adopted as an infant and raised on Maui, Kamaka was raised surrounded by the Hawaiian culture. He attended a Hawaiian immersion school, he speaks Hawaiian fluently, he dances hula, he plays ‘ukulele – and his love of Hawaiian music led him to teach himself to sing leo ki’eki’e (falsetto) by imitating some of Hawai’i’s greatest, including Aunty Genoa Keawe and Uncle Richard Ho’opi’i. (He taught himself so well that he won Richard Ho’opi’i’s very prestigious Hawaiian falsetto contest in 2003!) Although he performs many traditional Hawaiian songs, Kamaka is also a prolific songwriter and performs many of his original compositions.
        Join host Tony Solis for Pakele Live! this Thursday, Sept. 3, from 6-8 p.m. HST in the Pakele Lounge at the Ala Moana Hotel (410 Atkinson Dr., Honolulu). It’s free, all ages are welcome, and free parking is available next door at Ala Moana Shopping Center. Drinks are available for purchase, although the hotel no longer serves food.
        You may also watch live online at: http://www.pakelelive.com/
        Those in Japan can watch at: http://www.j-wave.co.jp/
        You may email the show at pakele@lava.net – mention your name and where you’re located - city, state – or country, if outside the U.S.!
        Ka Himeni Ana takes place Saturday September 5 at 7:30 pm in the Hawai’i Theater (Honolulu). Presented by the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, this annual contest consists of ten groups of local musicians performing traditional Hawaiian language songs without electric amplification of their voices or instruments. The instruments are restricted to ‘ukulele, guitar, acoustic bass, autoharp, steel guitar (which may be amplified), and any of the instruments used by Hawaiians prior to 1778. Each group must have at least two singers, but five is the maximum – and at least half of the singers must play an instrument. Contestants win prizes from $200-$1200, and the winning group receives a recording contract with Hula Records. Past winners of Ka Himeni Ana include many who went on to win Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including Kipona Leo Hawai`i (which later became Ho’okena), Holunape, Pilioha, and a number of others (now soloists or members of other Na Hoku winning groups), such as Ku’uipo Kumukahi, Del Beazley, Eric Lee and Brian Mersberg (Na Kama), and Dean Wilhelm and Barrett Awai (Kaukahi).
        Tickets range in price from $6 to $30 (plus a $3 “Restoration” fee). The Abrigo Ohana are among this years’ contestants.
