Eric Lee, founding member of the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning group Nā Kama, releases his debut solo recording “Crossroads” May 1, 2009.

The recording, available exclusively on iTunes and Amazon.com, consists of eight original songs and two classics, including an up-tempo arrangement of the Seeker’s 1965 hit, “I’ll Never Find Another You,” and a beautiful remake of Palani Vaughan’s “Ku‘i Ka Lono.”

As part of the group “Nā Kama,” Lee is primarily known for his expertise in writing and performing contemporary Hawaiian music – something his fans will find on this recording as well. However, “Crossroads” also showcases Lee's versatile playing and vocal styles and the influence rock, blues, country, folk, jazz and other genres have had on him. With its blend of Hawaiian and contemporary music, “Crossroads” invites you to see a side of Lee’s music many have never before experienced.

Lee performs all vocals and most of the instrumentation (acoustic and electric guitar, ‘ukulele, electric and upright bass), but several guest musicians are featured on individual tracks, including John Koko of the Mākaha Sons on upright acoustic bass, Bruce Shimabukuro on ‘ukulele, Kit Ebersbach on piano, and more.

When asked why he wanted to be among the first musicians in Hawai‘i to release his recording directly to digital download format, he cited the industry’s growing concern in areas such as the decline in CD sales, which have affected many music artists’ careers. With the dramatic increase in consumers and fans moving to digital downloads, Lee felt the timing was right to make this move. To address the concern of fans who miss having a CD insert in hand with liner notes, credits, and song lyrics, Lee stated that the information would be made available on his
website.

Although Lee is well known for his writing/producing and performances with Nā Kama band mates Brian Mersberg and Danny Naipo, his lifelong love affair with music began at age 9 with his first instrument - a $15 ‘ukulele purchased at Woolworth’s. He switched to keyboard lessons (given by Patrick Whittington) while attending intermediate school at Kamehameha. He further expanded his musical versatility through high school by learning to play guitar and bass, as well as to sing and compose. He won second and third place in the “Brown Bags to Stardom” competition and recorded his first studio album at the age of 19, with a group called The Kanile‘a Collection. That recording included Lee’s first published Hawaiian composition (with the help of good friend, Hailama Farden), “Nā Nalu Ha‘i O Mā‘ili,” a song on which he was able to jam with one of his guitar inspirations - the legendary Peter Moon. Along with band mates Jay Kauka and Brian Mersberg, the Kanile‘a Collection traveled all over Hawai‘i and Japan, played for hālau at various hula competitions (including the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival), and opened concerts for headlining acts such as Robi Kahakalau, Hapa, and 5:05.

Lee also performed with other groups, traveling to Sāmoa, Hong Kong, and Japan, and worked as a part-time studio musician, composing jingles and background music for commercial vendors, providing instrumentation and background vocals for other entertainers, and assisted in the production of recordings for various artists.

When Lee and Mersberg released their first recording, “Ke Ala Hou,” under their new name, Nā Kama, Lee was also playing with an island music group called the Ka‘ala Boys, a group that released three recordings and a Christmas single, and that traveled extensively. With the addition to Nā Kama of Danny Naipo on bass, and the group now as his full-time commitment, Lee strives to guide the band through music and performance, remaining steadfast to the group’s mission of excellence in Hawaiian music entertainment and language awareness. In addition, Lee continues to compose and produce music, as well as provide services as a studio musician for various recording projects, make guest appearances with other bands, and performing as a soloist in the many venues of Waikīkī. In June 2007, Lee released a CD single entitled “Camp Lē‘ahi,” a song he composed for the Camp Lē‘ahi summer program where he works as music teacher. He also recorded a Japanese version of the song for the Japanese students who attend the program in late summer.

In his “spare time” from Nā Kama, Lee’s ambition is to continue working on independent recording projects of his own, showcasing the numerous other facets of music that have been a part of his lifelong musical discovery.

Preliminary reviews of “Crossroads,” Lee’s debut solo effort, have been uniformly positive:

“An assortment of Hawaiian, hapa-haole and pop tunes presented in clean contemporary Hawaiian arrangements. Fans of Nā Kama can count on liking Lee as a solo artist.” – John Berger, Honolulu Star Bulletin, Hawai‘i

“An outstanding first solo effort!” – Don Bradway, KFOK FM, California

“All the songs just pull you into them… you can tell the hard work and thought that went into them. The vocals are fantastic, the instrumentals flawless… wonderful pacing and tempo... The quality of the music just forces you to listen to it, and pay attention to what you are hearing.” – Kaukini Norm, KAPU FM, California

Aloha kakou!

In today's newsletter:

  • This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis - Aunty May Kamai

  • This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis (TV version) - compilation show!

  • Big weekend for O'ahu acitivities

  • Augie T coming to the Bay Area (CA)? ... and other mainland cities

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week's guest on Pakele Live! is Aunty May Kamai, who is celebrating the recent release of her CD, "Aunty May's Hula Favorites."
John Berger's review in the Honolulu Star Bulletin says it best:
"This album of traditional Hawaiian music is a delightful collection of standards performed hula-style -- with no instrumental breaks -- by "Aunty May" Kamai and an all-star trio: producer William "Baba" Alimoot (bass and ukulele), Dwight Kanae (guitar and ukulele), and Casey Olsen (steel guitar).
"Kamai and the guys set the mood with the first verse of their opening number, "Kaulana Moloka'i," and maintain it throughout the eleven songs that follow. Kamai's soprano vocals are smoothly supported by the high harmonies of the trio, while Olsen embellishes the strummed melodies with the sweetness of steel guitar.
But in keeping with tradition, the arrangements are first and foremost about the voices and the all-important lyrics. Hula does not exist without lyrics in one language or another.
"E Huli Makou," "Ipo Hula" and "Mauna Loa" are among the classics revived and freshly interpreted here.
"At a time when all too many "new" Hawaiian CDs are re-issues of beloved vintage recordings, it is wonderful to have new versions of these evergreens -- for use by hula dancers, and simply for their beauty.
"Hula Records has set a high standard over the years with its liner notes, and producer Alimoot maintains that tradition by including English translations and cultural information. "
I hadn't yet received word (by press time) if Baba, Dwight, and Casey will be joining Aunty for her Pakele appearance, but fingers crossed!
Please join us Thursday, April 23 from 6-8pm HST in the Pakele Lounge at the Ala Moana Hotel (410 Atkinson Dr., Honolulu). It's free, and there's free parking next door at the Ala Moana shopping center. Drinks and pupus are available for purchase.
This week, Pakele Live! with Tony Solis is holding a special show to help bring awareness to the plight of Janell Araki from Precision Sound here in Hawai’i. Janell has been living with diabetes since childhood. She persevered, eventually marrying, having children, becoming a business woman – in short, just living her life. However, in late 2008 she was diagnosed with kidney failure, and thus began a series of dialysis treatments and many unforeseen complications, the worst of which was the onset of an incurable condition called Calciphylaxis. This rare condition has a survival rate of one to five years, but, if detected and treated early in its course, the survival can be much longer.
Performing at this special Pakele Live! event will be Vaihi (Aaron Ka`onohi, Bruce Nalua`i, Piko Lakatani, and Sam Langi, Jr.) - a group well known for their harmonies, humor, and always fun shows, and Kupaoa (Kellen Paik and Lihau Hannahs) – the supremely talented singer-songwriters whose debut album “Pili O Ke Ao” is on the preliminary ballot for the 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards! (There will be hula, too!)
Please join us for this special event on Thursday April 16 from 6-8 p.m. HST at the Pakele Lounge in the Ala Moana Hotel (410 Atkinson Dr., Honolulu). It’s free, all ages are welcome, there’s free parking next door at Ala Moana Shopping Center, and drinks and pupus are available for purchase.
If you can’t make it in person, watch online at http://www.pakelelive.com/
Those in Japan can watch at http://www.j-wave.co.jp/
Please Note! Because Janell’s medical insurance has run out, friends and family are also holding a special all-star fundraiser concert to help defray the ongoing medical costs. Here’s some info!
The show begins tonight at 7 pm HST on cable channel OC 16, and runs for one week. You can also watch online on the OC 16 website. Check the website for additional broadcast days/times.
The Abrigo Ohana is hosting the second monthly kanikapila (traditional Hawaiian music jam session) at Pizza Bob’s in Haleiwa this Saturday, April 18, from 2-4 pm. This is a casual event for all ages and skill levels (no shame about how well you play – this is a fun, “backyard” type event for everyone, and no one’s going to “judge” you!) So bring your ukulele, guitar, bass, (etc.) or just bring your ohana and friends and enjoy listening! It's FREE, (you can purchase your own food and beverages), and there’s plenty of parking around back.
You never know who’s going to show up – the more who do, the more fun it is, and we had sooo much fun at last month’s kanikapila! Joining the Abrigo Ohana (above) were Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Chino Montero, Hawaii Music Award Winner (and Na Hoku preliminary nominee) Doug Fitch, Derek Higa, Na Hoku preliminary nominee Kalei Gamiao, and more!
Pizza Bob’s is located right in Haleiwa town at 66-145 Kamehameha Hwy.
The newsletter I sent out last month announcing Bryan Tolentino’s California tour was the one that had so many issues caused by the old blog site that large portions were either omitted or doubled up – including the information about Bryan’s tour (first it was doubled, then it vanished!). But good news! There’s more info, I’m on a new blog site, and I’m confident you’ll be able to read it this time! For those who didn’t see the initial article:
‘Ukulele player extraordinaire Bryan Tolentino will be doing a series of concerts and workshops in California from April 25 to May 2. If his name is unfamiliar to you (and you aren’t one of the gazillions of friends he has on both myspace and Facebook), you may know Bryan from his regular appearances with Raiatea Helm or Weldon Kekauoha – and if you read the liner notes in CDs, you’ll know that he’s been asked to record with almost everyone in Hawai’i! (I recently told a friend to pick 5 CDs at random, and I’d almost guarantee that he’d find Bryan’s name in the liner notes on at least one!) Fans of Herb Ohta, Jr. may remember Herb introducing the song “G Minor Fleas” by saying he wrote it with a friend in 10 minutes while sitting in the park – that friend is Bryan.
A self-taught ‘ukulele player who began playing at age 10, Bryan’s first band was formed after he graduated from high school (a ’79 St. Louis grad, for you fellow alumni!), when he and a few friends created a group called “The Side Order Band.” The friends? Just a few “unknowns” in Hawaiian music – Del Beazley, Chris Kamaka, and Asa Young! The group reunited in 2005 to play on Bryan’s debut CD “Ka ‘Ukulele Lele,” a mix of Hawaiian, contemporary and original songs that was uniformly well-received. We’ve been somewhat-impatiently awaiting another album since then… (Note: those who attended or watched PALI’s CD release party at Pakele Live! this past Friday got to see ¾ of the Side Order Band, when Bryan, Del, and Chris took the stage!)
Mark S. Tucker, in his review of the compilation CD “Legends of the ‘Ukulele 2,” writes, “When Bryan Tolentino dives into Steve Howe-ish lines in Ka Ukulele Lele, one begins to understand that, like most any instrument, it's the heart and soul of the player that brings the axe to life, not the other way around…though I'm sure the sentiment and affection of the players for their instruments would assert otherwise.”
Side Order band mate Asa Young (pictured, at left) is flying in to join Bryan (center) for these concerts. A little info about Asa: he learned Hawaiian music from his ohana while growing up in Kaneohe and ‘Aiea. He began playing ‘ukulele, then learned guitar (the old style ki ho’alu - slack key) from his Uncle Ernest Kahaunaele. Through his family’s Christmas Eve “Halawa Jam” parties, he was influenced by his brother Rowan’s dear friend Reverend Dennis Kamakahi along with Uncle Eddie Kamae, Joe Marshall and David “Feet” Rogers – better known as the Sons of Hawai’i.
Asa was a member of the ‘Aiea Swinging Singers choral group that performed throughout the U. S. (and other countries), and in 1975 was asked to be part of the Men of Waimapuna Hula Hālau under the direction of nā kumu hula Darryl Lupenui, John Kaimikaua, O’Brien Eselu and Thaddius Wilson. He later went on to perform with John Kaimikaua’s Hālau Hula ‘O Kukunaokalā. Dancing hula was a way of life through which he was able to learn more about his native culture, heritage and specific roots of Hawaiian music.
Due to job transfers for both him and his wife Laura, Asa is now living in North Carolina. In 2004, Asa, Michael Ebalaroza and Greg Torzillo formed the group Hawaiian Kine Band, and currently play for private parties and conventions.
The 2nd annual HECO (Hawaiian Electric Company) “Grow Hawaiian” festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 25 on the Great Lawn at Bishop Museum (O’ahu). (I’m getting conflicting info on admission – one source says it’s free for kama’aina and military, although it doesn’t list prices for anyone else - but the Bishop Museum website says “Free Admission” and doesn’t list any restrictions.) There will be music by Kaukahi, Holunape, and Weldon Kekauoha. Here’s some info about the festival:
“Weavers, dancers, kapa makers, and other practitioners of traditional Hawaiian culture meet with biologists, conservationists, and horticulturists to explore their common passion for the native and Polynesian introduced plants of Hawai‘i. Festival-goers have a unique opportunity to meet and talk with many of the foremost practitioners of Hawaiian arts including lei makers and kapa makers, as well as leading scientists and entomologists. Renewable energy initiatives and energy conservation measures designed to combat global warming will also be presented.”
I want to bid a personal farewell to two people who are sorely missed:
Joanna Demeo, who worked at the Outrigger Hotel and who was also one of our camera crew at Pakele Live! moved to Austin, TX at the end of March. Joanna, (seen here in a photo with Herb Ohta, Jr. and Daniel Ho at their ‘ukulele workshops held last year at the Outrigger, and on her last day at Pakele, with the rest of the crew), was a consummate professional and full of fun – and we miss her like you wouldn’t believe! Although I think it was almost as difficult for her to leave Hawai’i as it was for us to see her go…
Grant James, who was the General Manager of the Ala Moana Hotel and who, with Pali Ka’aihue, was instrumental in bringing Pakele Live to light, left Hawai’i the same day as Joanna. Grant was offered a position he couldn’t refuse – running a new Outrigger Hotel in his home country of Australia. Grant has a deep love of both the Hawaiian culture and its people, so this was a bittersweet move for him. He was going “home,” but he was also leaving the adopted home he loved so well. (Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of him the day we had some Maori dancers at Pakele – when he was dragged up to dance with them… I was laughing too hard to take one – and it would be perfect timing to share it with you. He’s too far away to slap me upside the head!)
To Joanna and Grant – we love you, we miss you, and we wish you all the best! Please come back and visit soon – it’s not the same without you…
The Abrigo Ohana needs our kokua!
abrigos - tim and kidsMany of you are familiar with the three very talented keiki known as the Abrigo Ohana (Timi, Emily and Quinn), either from seeing them play live, seeing their YouTube videos, or watching their outstanding Pakele Live! performance earlier this year...
The children's father, Tim Abrigo, is a master mechanic who suffered an injury at work in February. He has been in severe pain and unable to walk (or work) since the injury, and the family desperately needs our help! They've had no income since that time, but hadn't mentioned anything to anyone. Mom Lanet was trying to handle everything herself....
To read about the family’s plight, please go to the ChipIn page that has been created for them (click on the blog title above - it is a link to that page). You may also go directly to the donation page by clicking on the radio button in the widgit below.
(NOTE: Since my initial article on this, Tim has learned that a piece of a disk has broken off and is floating in and around his spine. He will need back surgery, but the length and extent of his recovery from that surgery is not yet known...)
There will be two Pakele Live! with Tony Solis shows this week – our regular Thursday concert on April 9 and a special CD release concert on Friday, April 10.
On Thursday we feature both Kalei Gamiao and the Gregg Hammer Band:
Those of you who came to (or watched online) the January show where we featured the Abrigo Ohana and Brittni Paiva will remember Kalei – the young ‘ukulele player introduced by Brittni, who performed a few songs at the beginning of her set. Kalei released his debut album last year (Kalei Gamiao Contemporary ‘Ukulele Instrumentals), a blend of original songs and well-known standards, which has resulted in him being on the 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards preliminary ballot in the Most Promising Artist, Instrumental Album, Album of the Year, and Favorite Entertainer of the Year categories. Studying with the likes of Gordon Mark, Byron Yasui, Benny Chong, and Kimo Hussey (among others), Kalei began playing ‘ukulele at age 13 and has won a number of ‘ukulele contests. Here is a link to some videos of interviews he did on local TV station KGMB.
Comedian, singer, and impressionist Gregg Hammer and the Gregg Hammer Band (with Kevin "Slash" Brown on guitar, Mark Joven Arista on keyboards, "Butch" Nicolas on drums, Roland Acosta on keyboards and trumpet, and Harold Ibea on bass) offer a blend of music and comedy (and Gregg’s “dancing”) sure to leave you laughing. A former Honolulu police officer (for 10 years), Gregg does impressions of Tom Jones, Elvis, and Don Ho, to name a few. He and the band have a live stage show you can catch on the last Friday of every month in the Gregg Hammer Showroom at Dave & Buster's in Honolulu (1030 Auahi Street, in the Ward Entertainment Complex).
Please join us either in person or online this Thursday, April 9, from 6 – 8 p.m. HST at the Pakele Lounge in the Ala Moana Hotel (lobby level – and you can park free next door at the Ala Moana shopping center!). It’s free, and all ages are welcome! Drinks and pupus are available for purchase.If you can’t join us in person, watch live on the internet at: http://www.pakelelive.com/ Those in Japan can watch online at: http://www.j-wave.co.jp/
Friday’s Pakele Live show features the CD Release party for PALI’s latest album “…With Aloha” (also on the 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards preliminary ballot in a number of categories). In addition to PALI, special guests who will be performing include: Kalapana; Ledward Kaapana; the (Genoa) Keawe Ohana; Jon Yamasato/David Kamakahi/Darin Leong; Don Kaulia; and ¾ of the original Side Order Band - Bryan Tolentino, Del Beazley, and Chris Kamaka (Asa Young is living in N. Carolina and, despite my begging, is unable to make it - although he will be appearing with Bryan later this month in California!).
Please join us this Friday, April 10, to celebrate the release of PALI’s wonderful new CD! For those who can’t make it in person, this special Friday Pakele Live! will also be broadcast live online. The show may start at 6:30 pm (HST) instead of 6, and is expected to run until 9:30 pm or until pau (a number of other musicians have said they might drop by after they finish their Friday night gigs). If you’re coming in person, get there early! With this all-star lineup, we’re expecting a large crowd…
